General Terms
Local - Refers to the computer (place) you are currently working on.
File - Refers to a computer file - can be an image, a video clip, or any other kind of data.
Quality - Refers (ambiguously) the level of compression, or compression ratio (ie. jpg 'normal' = 1:43)
Digital Camera- Refers to a camera that takes still images and uses compact flash or smart media for storage - interfaces with a computer through either a
Serial or USB port.
Digital Video (DV) Camera- Refers to a video camera that records video to a digital tape - interfaces with a computer through a FireWire/iLink (IEEE 1394) port.
Serial- Refers to a port on both PCs (9/15 pin 2 rows) and Macs (8 pin round) that allows the connection of external devices - 1.5 Mbps
USB- Refers to a new type of port, found both on PCs and Macs, that allows for a faster, digital connection to external devices - 12 Mbps.
FireWire/iLink- Apple/Sony - Refers to USB's 'bigger brother', used primarily for external hard drives and digital video - 400 Mbps
IEEE 1394 - [institute of electrical and electronics engineers] - Refers to standard created by this institue on which both Firewire and iLink are based.
Byte- Refers to a small chunk of data - the smallest denomination used for measuring file size.
Bit- Refers to an even smaller chunk of data - 8 bits make up a byte - used in measuring rates of data transfer.
KBps- [kilobytes per second] - Refers to rate of data transfer - 1000 bytes per second - often used for measuring video data rates/fast downloads
Kbps- [kilobits per second] - Refers to rate of data transfer - 1000 bits per second - often used for modems/slow downloads.
DSL [digital subscriber line] - Refers to Internet service through digital connection through existing phone lines
Cable Modem - Refers to Internet service through cable TV lines.
Digital Imagery
Thumbnail- Refers to a small preview of an image - normally linked to the full size in a web page.
DPI [dots per inch] - Refers to the resolution of a given image -standard web resolution is 72 dpi.
Resolution - Refers to DPI of a given image - images for print must be at a higher resolution (300+) for good quality.
Memory - Refers to the number of bytes the image file takes up - important to know to keep in mind upload/download times.
Graphic Software - Refers to any program, from shareware to full-blown application suite, that can manipulate the many attributes of an image file.
Digital Video DV [digital video] - Refers to the format Digital Video Cameras record in - can be converted to web-friendly formats (codecs) using appropriate compression utilities.
Memory- Refers to the number of bytes the video file takes up important to know to keep in mind upload/download times.
Quicktime - Refers to the Mac-standard but PC-compatible engine for viewing movies, either on the Internet or Locally.
MOV - Refers to the Mac standard file type for movie files
AVI - Refers to the PC standard file type for movie files
MPG/MPEG -motion pictures expert group] - Refers to cross platform, high-quality file codec (mpg-1) for movie files.
Codec - [compression/decompression] - Refers to the algorithm used in compressing the movie file's data, then used to decompress when viewing.
Sorenson - Refers to the newest standard in Internet video compression - used by Quicktime version 3 and higher - small file size while retaining great quality.
Cinepak - Refers to the older standard for Internet video compression - used by all versions of Quicktime - small/medium sized files with ok quality.
MPG-1 - Refers to the crossplatform standard for video compression created by the Motion Pictures Experts Group - small file size, great quality, but processor intensive encoding/decoding.
MPG-2 - Refers to the cross platform standard for DVD movies created by the Motion Pictures Expert Group.
AVI - [audio video interleave] - Refers to the PC standard for video compression - comes in many forms .
Compression Utilities- Refers to programs that are used to (re)encode movie files with appropriate codecs (depends on target platform.)
Video Software- Refers to video editing software - can be used to arrange, add effects, sound, etc.
Panoramic Movies
QTVR- [quicktime virtual reality] - Refers to Quicktime format of panoramic movies and virtual objects - made by 'stitching' images together horizontally.
IPIX - [internet pictures] - Refers to format for 360 degree panoramic movies made with special lens - cost per movie.
QTVR Software- Refers to free utilities for rudimentary QTVR creation, as well as QTVR Authoring Studio for enhanced features and control.
